Dwayne Johnson beats a lot of beasts in first trailer for Hercules

We now have our first look at Dwayne Johnson's HERCULES from director Brett Ratner and it feels like a moody kind of fantasy action pic. Featuring Johnson as the titular hero, the trailer is narrated by co-star Ian McShane who teases the legendary aspect of the character, who roams around a lot of different regions fighting a wide assortment of beasts and monsters. If anything, this film looks very different from Renny Harlin's THE LEGEND OF HERCULES released earlier this year.

"I Am Hercules!":

Here's the synopsis:

Having enduring his legendary twelve labors, Hercules, the Greek demigod, has his life as a sword-for-hire tested when the King of Thrace and his daughter seek his aid in defeating a tyrannical warlord.

Still a little close to call, but I'm intrigued. I won't say blown away, but in all honesty I never expected to be. Ultimately, my expectations were set squarely on "this should be fun" and from the trailer I'd say it looks very much that way. It feels akin to the early THE MUMMY films (of which Johnson got his big-screen start), which were some pretty fun, hair-brained entertainment. If nothing else, you know Johnson is going to be a blast to watch in this and for that alone, you can count me in.

HERCULES, starring Dwayne Johnson, Ian McShane, John Hurt, Joseph Fiennes, Rufus Sewell, and Irina Shayk bashes into theaters on July 25, 2014.
