interview with director Rupert Wainwright (STIGMATA), who’s currently filming
THE FOG remake in Vancouver.
THE FOG is amongst the new line of remakes being made right now, and is
probably one of the biggest unnecessary remakes of the bunch (right
behind THE EVIL DEAD and THE HITCHER). And with Wainwright at the helm,
who brought us that steaming pile of donkey crap STIGMATA, THE FOG is a
release that I was dreading from day one. Until now.
He had a lot of interesting things to say about why the remake, and
where they plan on taking this new version of THE FOG. Check out what he
had to say:
“We’re all fans of the original movie, but it’s 25 years old and there
are plenty of reasons to remake it. A little went a long way back then,
but nowadays the technology has got to the point where you can really
do a lot with the fog itself.”
And are we going to expect the same shite he delivered in STIGMATA,
with flashing editing as an attempt to cover the quality of the film?
“The bar has been raised so high recently, not just in the recent run
of studio remakes, but in movies like 28 Days Later. We’re being really
hard on ourselves, so the end product will provide exactly what the
audience wants, not just in terms of shocks and scares and special
effects, but in terms of good writing and good performances. If you don’t have
nuanced, believable characters you can actually care about, why would
you give a shit what happens to them?”
No telling what the remake is going to be about, as he hints that “it’s true to the spirit of the original, but it’s pretty
different. We’ve got some pretty major surprises, and I don’t think
horror fans are going to be disappointed.”
produce greatness. Although, there’s no doubt that Uwe Boll has passion
in his work too, so there’s no telling how this one’s going to turn out.
But I’m feelin’ a bit better about it than I had before. I’d rather
they not remake it, but if they’re going to do it, they better damn well
do it right!
THE FOG, written by Cooper Lang (THE CORE…uh…) stars Tom Welling
(SMALLVILLE) and Maggie Grace (LOST), and has a slated release date of
January 6th in the UK, so no telling if they plan on keeping their North
American October release that was first speculated.
