Footage details on Bad Robot’s R-Rated Overlord & news on Cloverfield series

Paramount's CinemaCon presentation kicked off tonight and we saw a lot of interesting things in the pipeline from the studio, but one of the more notable things shown and discussed was for Bad Robot's OVERLORD from producer J.J. Abrams, who sent in a video message to introduce the film and share some information about it. Abrams first wanted to clear up the rumor that OVERLORD was secretly a CLOVERFIELD film, which has been circulating for a while now. However, he did say that a proper sequel is in the works and coming soon. As for OVERLORD, which is about a group of paratroopers around D-Day that jump in to occupied territory and end up in a Nazi compound where human experimentation has gone awry, creating a bunch of zombie-like people that the Soldiers have to fight.

Abrams clarified that it is the first R-rated film from Bad Robot and that it is "batshit."

The footage we saw featured Wyatt Russell, Bokeem Woodbine and a cast of relative unknowns in traditional WW2 paratrooper gear jumping in as planes blow up around them, before finally getting to the ground, linking up and heading out. We see them discover the heavily-guarded facility and infiltrate it, which is when everything gets a little crazy. We see a bunch of bloody, zombie-like creatures, obviously people that have been experimented on, vials of a red substance (which is injected into one of the soldiers and seems to give him super strength), and a bunch of shooting, explosions and yelling. It's accompanied with a rock soundtrack and plays very much like a Grindhouse film, which is an eye-brow raising choice, but not necessarily in a bad way. Toward's the end of the footage, we see a Soldier approaching a woman who is calling out and covered up with a sheet. The soldier pulls it back to reveal that she is just a head, connected to a spine and stripped of the rest of her body, yet still alive and talking. Batshit, indeed.

So, there ya go. OVERLORD is NOT a CLOVERFIELD movie, but a CLOVERFIELD sequel IS in the works. OVERLORD is scheduled to hit theaters on October 26th, 2018.
