THOR star Chris Hemsworth was verily crushed that director Kenneth Branagh wouldn’t be back for the sequel, but Marvel is already considering his successor.
For the Thunder God’s second adventure (outside THE AVENGERS), Marvel is talking with someone who has a recent fantasy epic to his credit: Brian Kirk, who helmed several episodes of HBO’s phenomenal “Game of Thrones.” A premium cable regular, Kirk also handled directing duties on episodes of “Boardwalk Empire”, “Dexter”, “Brotherhood” and “The Tudors”.
THOR 2 would be Kirk’s first big-screen (and big-budget) effort, but Marvel seems receptive to making non-traditional choices with its superhero features. Kirk reportedly caught the studio’s eye thanks to his proficiency with ensembles — Variety claims that the THOR sequel is “expected to feature a large cast of Asgardians and creatures in the Norse mythology-set world.” More of Heimdall, Sif and the Warriors Three would certainly be welcome…
Other contenders included Drew Goddard (who directed Hemsworth in the endlessly delayed CABIN IN THE WOODS), James McTeigue (V FOR VENDETTA) and Breck Eisner (THE CRAZIES).
The sequel is already plotted for release on July 26, 2013.
