Francis Lawrence talks Constantine 2 and I Am Legend prequel

If you’ll recall from a few years ago, right after that massive success of I AM LEGEND, there began talk of a prequel, which would chart the days leading up to the massive viral outbreak and eventual end of the world. The prequel was officially given the greenlight in September of 2008, with director Francis Lawrence, star Will Smith and screenwriter D.B. Weiss all attached… Now, as many years have passed with not much progress on this film, the obvious has now been confirmed.

In an interview with MTV, Francis Lawrence simply states, “I don’t think that’s ever going to happen” in response to a question asking if the prequel might see the light of day soon. Indeed, it’s probably just as well.

There’s potentially better news for fans of Lawrence’s first film, CONSTANTINE. When asked if there’s still a chance we’ll ever see a sequel to the Keanu Reeves-starrer, Lawrence responds with, “It would be great to figure out a sequel, and we’ve been trying to figure one out, it would be great to do the really dark, scary… we got caught in that weird PG-13/R no man’s land, and we should do the hard R scary version, which I would love to do.”

Time will tell is Lawrence, who just directed the Reece Witherspoon/Robert Pattinson drama WATER FOR ELEPHANTS (quite a leap, eh?), will ever actually make CONSTANTINE 2, or if it’s just a pipedream. It grossed over $230 million worldwide theatrically, so it was certainly a hit, but is the audience really there for another? Weigh in below.
