Sorry, but the story isn’t nearly as interesting as the title implies…
In an interesting – but hardly surprising – move, Universal has changed the title of the fantasy flick CIRQUE DU FREAK (which we last told you about here) to THE VAMPIRE’S ASSISTANT. (I say hardly surprising because CIRQUE DU FREAK doesn’t exactly scream “come see me!”) Not only that, they’ve moved up the release date, from January 2010 to this October – the 23rd to be exact. That pits it against Lionsgate’s SAW VI, and while they’re two different kinds of movies, it’s still a risky bet on Universal’s part.
THE VAMPIRE’S ASSISTANT is actually the title of the second book in Darren Shan’s “Vampire Blood” Trilogy. (“Cirque Du Freak” – which this movie is based on – is the name of the first book.) The film stars John C. Reilly, Chris Massoglia, Willem dafoe, Ken Watanabe, Ray Stevenson, and Salma Hayek (naturually, pictured below). It was directed by Paul Wietz (IN GOOD COMPANY), from a screenplay writtem by Brian Helgeland (MYSTIC RIVER).
