Friday the 13th to become a TV series and explore Jason’s family history

As the potential found footage reboot of FRIDAY THE 13TH eyes a director, the iconic Jason Voorhees franchise may be headed to the small screen as well. Sean Cunningham, director of the original FRIDAY THE 13TH, is producing the series along with Emmett/Furla/Oasis Films and Fox Entertainment. But, when you ask how the show will tackle the Jason story, expect something new.

The series is contemporary, focusing on the eclectic characters of Crystal Lake who are forced to confront the return of the killer, as new secrets about his wacky family are revealed.

The series is being written by VFX artist Bill Basso (TERMINATOR 2: JUDGEMENT DAY) and conceptual artist Jordu Schell (AVATAR) and will imagine the Voorhees family through multiple generations, revealing that the evil did not start with that fateful summer at Camp Crystal Lake. How this will work remains to be seen but will probably add some supernatural explanation for why Jason is so unstoppable.

Cunningham added the following:

“Jason Voorhees is synonymous with the genre and we plan to build on this legacy with a provocative and compelling take that expands upon the storylines that have already thrilled millions worldwide.

There was another FRIDAY THE 13TH television series in the 1980s that did not feature Jason at all but instead tackled themes surrounding the unlucky date on the calendar. With a huge influx of horror on television in recent years, making a TV show versus another cliche big screen adventure may allow for some more creative freedom with the character, but I am not sure if it can be sustained for multiple seasons. You have to admit it may be an intriguing show to watch.
