Unsettling full trailer for HBO’s The Leftovers starring Justin Theroux

Television has yet to yield a TV series with as much mystery as LOST. The iconic ABC series about survivors of a plane crash had such an intricate mythology that it instantly became an important moment in television history. Since then, numerous shows have tried to build something like it and have failed miserably. Maybe it will take showrunner Damon Lindelof and a new series to recreate that same popularity.

a couple of weeks ago, we got a look at the brief teaser for Lindelof’s HBO series THE LEFTOVERS. It smacked of surreal and supernatural themes that reminded me of THE WALKING DEAD meets LOST with a little TWIN PEAKS thrown in for good measure. Now, we have a full trailer that premiered in front of GAME OF THRONES last night that takes the series to a whole new level.

Starring Justin Theroux, Amy Brennaman, Carrie Coon, Christopher Eccleston, Ann Dowd, Amanda Warren, Liv Tyler, and Michael Gaston, THE LEFTOVERS tells the story of what happens to the world after 2% of the global population suddenly disappears. Is it The Rapture or something artificial? The trailer doesn’t say but it definitely does a good job of showing just how f*cked up the world could get if such an event took place. Just how long a show like THE LEFTOVERS could remain interesting remains to be seen, but it definitely holds as much promise as the Stephen King series UNDER THE DOME.

THE LEFTOVERS premieres on HBO on June 29, 2014.
