With Frank Darabont’s sad and shocking departure comes newfound responsibility for FX man Greg Nicotero…
According to various sources, Nicotero has signed a first look deal at AMC. The pact will transition Greg from mere FX work to directorial duties on hit zombie skein “The Walking Dead”, including co-executive producing, and helming a 6-part web-series chronicling the origin of the “Bicycle Zombie.” In addition, he’ll also help develop several projects for the fast growing network.
“Greg’s talent extends well beyond the word of special fx makeup,” said Joel Stillerman, AMC senior vp original programming, production and digital content. “He is also a truly talented director, and has an incredibly comprehensive understanding and appreciation for great storytelling. His knowledge and respect for the genre is unparalleled, and we are looking forward to expanding our relationship with him with an eye towards developing more great original series.”
Here’s how Nicotero responded:
“To be able to branch out and to develop not only the web series but also genre material is something I have always wanted to do; given the people I have had the pleasure of working with over the last 23 years.”
Word is Nicotero will also direct one of the 13 season 2 episodes of “The Walking Dead.” Hopefully with his contributions growing, the slack for Darabont’s absence will somewhat pick up.
