Earlier this year, it was announced that Marvel Television and Hulu were developing a live-action Ghost Rider series, but it was revealed yesterday that creative differences had led to the project being shelved. Ghost Rider, we hardly knew ye.
The series would have focused on Robbie Reyes, a man living on the Texas/Mexico border who is consumed by hellfire and supernaturally bound to a demon. When he unleashes the Rider, Robbie brings vengeance for the innocents he encounters, but struggles controlling the power he wields. The role was set to have been played by Gabriel Luna, who served the same role in the fourth season of Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and the actor took to Instagram to confirm the premature demise of the series.
Justified's Ingrid Escajeda was slated to serve as showrunner, and she expressed her enthusiasm for the project when it was first announced. "I couldn’t be more excited and honored to be handed the reins to a Marvel character as beloved as GHOST RIDER. This story hits every note for me—my love for grounded yet conflicted characters and my desire to scare the $&!# out of people! It’s important to me to find a take that thrills existing fans as well as wider audiences and I believe we’ve done just that," said Escajeda. Well, that's a shame. While the Ghost Rider series may not have worked out on Hulu, I'd be shocked if Marvel didn't revisit the character in another form in the near future.
Although Garbiel Luna doesn't have Ghost Rider to look forward to, he does have a major role in the upcoming TERMINATOR: DARK FATE, which hits theaters on November 1, 2019. Luna plays Rev-9, an advanced Terminator prototype who can separate into two fully autonomous units and who was, surprise, sent back in time to terminate select individuals.
