THR today is reporting that Gael Garcia Bernal (LETTERS TO JULIET, Y TU MAMA TAMBIEN) and Diego Luna (MILK, Y TU MAMA TAMBIEN) have joined the oddball-sounding comedy for director Matt Piedmont (HBO’s “Funny or Die Presents…”). Bernal will play a family friend while Luna will play Ferrell’s brother.
Also coming aboard are Genesis Rodriguez (“Entourage”) as Ferrell’s gorgeous love interest (pictured below), Pedro Armendariz Jr. (ONCE UPON A TIME IN MEXICO, THE CRIME OF FATHER AMARO), Hector Jimenez (SIN NOMBRE, NACHO LIBRE), and Adrian Martinez (IT’S KIND OF A FUNNY STORY, KICK-ASS).
Though the story for the film has so far been kept under wraps, the idea is that it will be told “in an overly dramatic telenovela style and feature English subtitles.” As a Hispanic man who grew up in a household where telenovelas (Spanish soap operas) were always playing in the background, I’m already howling at the very thought of Ferrell attempting this. God, I can’t wait for a trailer. This could very well be the Spanish ANCHORMAN.
CASA DE MI PADRE begins shooting this month.
