Even if you’re not familiar with the 1976 sci-fi actioner LOGAN’S RUN, how can you not be excited to see Ryan Gosling star in a flick by Nicolas Winding Refn (BRONSON, VALHALLA RISING)?
Sure I’d love to see Refn pen his own script for the Warner Bros. remake, but at least the newest name bandied about has a bit of a background in genre material.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Will Beall (THE GANGSTER SQUAD, “Castle”) is now in talks to adapt the screenplay from William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson’s futuristic tome. If this pans out, it could mark the second collaboration between Beall and Gosling, as the latter is, along with Sean Penn, being courted to star in the L.A. CONFIDENTIAL style cop drama THE GANGSTER SQUAD. In case you hadn’t heard, Beall is an ex-LAPD officer.
As for LOGAN’S RUN, Beall replaces Alex Garland, who had been attached prior to Gosling and Refn’s involvement. Here’s the synopsis for the project:
It’s the 23rd Century and at age 21… your life is over! Logan-6 has been trained to kill; born and bred from conception to be the best of the best. But his time is short and before his life ends he’s got one final mission: Find and destroy Sanctuary, a fabled haven for those that chose to defy the system. But when Logan meets and falls in love with Jessica, he begins to question the very system he swore to protect and soon they’re both running for their lives.
Alright, so what do we think? Does Beall inspire confidence that a good script will get written, or is he still far too unknown to give him the benefit of the doubt?
