George Clooney joins Sandra Bullock for Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity

After a great deal of starts and stops, it looks like Alfonso Cuaron’s epic sci-fi thriller GRAVITY is finally ready to blast off. The Hollywood Reporter says that George Clooney has taken on the role originally meant for Robert Downey Jr., who dropped out of the project in October thanks to the numerous delays that have plagued it.

Clooney will star opposite Sandra Bullock; the two will play astronauts who struggle to return to Earth after a disaster nearly demolishes their craft. Word is that the female lead is the crucial one, meaning Clooney will essentially be a supporting character.

Cuaron’s film will be shot in 3D and has a budget nearing eighty billion dollars. Okay, that’s an exaggeration, but this sucker won’t be cheap for Warner Bros.; the studio reportedly even considered shelving the project for good after Downey Jr.’s departure… I’m just eager to see what else Cuaron has up his sleeve – been waiting for the man’s follow-up to CHILDREN OF MEN for far too long.

GRAVITY doesn’t have a start or release date, but hopefully both will be revealed soon as steam gets picked up…
