George R.R. Martin apparently doesn’t watch Game of Thrones anymore

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

This season of GAME OF THRONES has been so exciting! Finally, Jon meeting Dany! Dragons fucking up White Walkers! A goddamn zombie-ice-dragon! Holy shit! Everyone should be watching this!

However, there’s one person in particular who’s specifically avoiding this show, and it’s the author of the original novels the show’s based on, George R.R. Martin. According to an interview with Metro, Martin said he has no time to watch the new season of GAME OF THRONES, since he’s too busy writing and touring. He also stated:

The book series and TV adaptation [are going] their separate ways…On the screen characters are killed right and left. About twenty of them have died already, which are quite alive to me and will appear in a new book.

This is actually pretty good news, as a) if you hated where the show is headed, it’s possible Martin’s books will be decidedly different, and b) if you loved the show, but still want to read the books, at least you can still be surprised while reading. I have no doubt that the endgame will be similar in both mediums; however, I’m also sure each will take vastly different approaches of getting there. I mean, if both Scott Pilgrims can exist side-by-side (a film also famously produced before the series proper had finished), and loved pretty much equally, I don’t see how the same can’t happen with this.

Meanwhile, the last episode of the seventh season will premiere on HBO this Sunday!
