Ghost Stories, starring Martin Freeman, to start shooting this Halloween

The popular horror play GHOST STORIES is coming to the silver screen, with production commencing in late October! The play's co-writers Andy Nyman and Jeremy Dyson will be helming the project, which has a planned release set for 2017. The movie is being produced by the UK-based Warp Films, for good reason.

Says Nyman:

There was a lot of interest early on from a couple of big American studios that wanted to do it, but they hadn’t even seen it. It was flattering but strange because you’re having conversations with people who are saying: ‘When we see it, that will be fantastic.’ But you think, why do you want it? You don’t know anything about it.

The first meeting we had with an American producer, they said we should take one particular character, turn it into a girl and it make it a breakout role for someone from the Disney channel.

We thought, ‘Oh god, that’s not what we want to make’. We’d rather make the film for no money and have the freedom to express ourselves.

Ghost Stories is deeply British in all of its oddness and quirks, and Warp gets that and support our artistic vision.

I've been wondering how a singular play experience like this will translate to the haunted house film genre, which is much more familiar to jaded audiences. A Disney star definitely wouldn't have been the right choice, so at least they're on the right path. Well, I suppose we won't have to wait too long to find out for sure!

GHOST STORIES tells the story of:

Phillip Goodman, a professor of psychology and arch-skeptic who has his rationality tested to the hilt when he receives a letter apparently from beyond the grave. His mentor Charles Cameron, the ‘original’ TV parapsychologist went missing fifteen years before, presumed dead, and yet now he writes to Goodman saying that the pair must meet.

Cameron, it seems, is still very much alive. And he needs Goodman to find a rational explanation for three unsolved cases that have shaken Cameron to his core. As Goodman investigates, he meets three haunted people, each with a tale more frightening, uncanny and inexplicable than the last. Gradually

Nyman will also be starring in the movie as Dr. Phillip Goodman, a role he originated on the stage. Joining him in the cast are Martin Freeman and Paul Whitehouse.
