Ghostbusters 3 will be made some day, according to Dan Aykroyd

One nice thing to come of Paul Feig’s female-centric GHOSTBUSTERS film? We can now stop writing about GHOSTBUSTERS 3. How many articles were dedicated to that third film “maybe” happening? How many times did we agonize over “will Bill Murray be in it or won’t he?” I know, we don’t have to write these things up, but the demand for a new GHOSTBUSTERS movie seemed so high (or, at the very least, so worthy of debate) that we couldn’t help ourselves. With the announcement of Feig’s new film, it seemed we were finally able to put all that nonsense behind us.

*record scratch* Not so fast! Here I am, writing about GHOSTBUSTERS 3 again, because Dan Aykroyd, the purveyor of so many of those dastardly rumors, has to go and bring it up again. The man still won’t allow it pass on to the afterlife.

During an episode of the Sirius/XM show “Unmasked with Ron Bennington” (via Interrobang), Aykroyd revealed that he does indeed still plan on making that elusive second sequel to GHOSTBUSTERS one day:

Oh, I’ve written… well, we have…I’ve written, well, there’s three drafts of the old concept that exists. And we’re going to be able to salvage some of it and use it. Yeah, we’re gonna be able to use it some day. Let’s get this one made and that will reinvigorate the franchise and then we’ll go on to maybe doing a more conventional third sequel as we were planning and another idea I have for it.”

You keep on dreamin’, Danny boy.

What I do think is likely is seeing the old guard of Ghostbusters join the ladies at some point; either as cameos in the new film or to a more significant degree in the sequel. However, I’d be very, very surprised if there’s ever actually a GHOSTBUSTERS 3.
