Gillian Anderson confirms that her X-Files days are over

At the New York Comic Con this past October, The X-Files star Gillian Anderson said she thought the new season "will be it" for her days playing the Dana Scully character. In a new interview with TV Insider, Anderson reiterates her intention to step away from the series – and this time she didn't just say she "thinks" she's done with The X-Files. Now she sounds quite certain.

I've said from the beginning this is it for me. I was a bit surprised by people's [shocked] reaction to my announcement… because my understanding was that this was a single season."

Fox is only bringing this revival to the screen on a season-by-season basis, so there is a chance that the upcoming season 11 will be the end of the show… but when a series can return to TV fifteen years after it originally left the air (and a feature film was released during those fifteen years), it's tough to believe that The X-Files will really be ending any time soon.

X-Files creator Chris Carter says,

There are a lot more X-Files stories to tell. Whether we get to tell them is a question mark. The truth is out there."

So if Carter gets his way, it looks like there will be more X-Files beyond season 11. But he might have to tell those stories without Anderson's participation.

Starring Anderson, David Duchovny, Mitch Pileggi, William B. Davis, Annabeth Gish, Robbie Amell, Lauren Ambrose, Barbara Hershey, Haley Joel Osment, Brian Huskey, and Karin Konoval, The X-Files season 11 begins airing on Fox this Wednesday, January 3rd. The season is set to run for 10 episodes.
