Glen Powell lands role alongside Tom Cruise in Top Gun: Maverick after all

A little over a month ago, Paramount was looking at three actors for the role of Goose's son in TOP GUN: MAVERICK including Miles Teller (THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE), Nicholas Hoult (X-MEN: DARK PHOENIX), and Glen Powell (SET IT UP). As we know, Teller was the one to snag the role, but it seems that Powell has managed to secure himself a role in the upcoming TOP GUN sequel after all.

THR has reported that Glen Powell is in talks to join the cast of TOP GUN: MAVERICK after impressing Tom Cruise and Jerry Bruckheimer during the final testing process which involved both Miles Teller and Glen Powell flying out to Cruise's home in Clearwater, Florida. Although Teller came away victorious, Cruise and Bruckheimer knew they had to find another part for Powell, and they're currently in the process of beefing up the role for him. The nature of Powell's role is being kept under wraps. The TOP GUN sequel is slated to be helmed by Joseph Kosinski (ONLY THE BRAVE) and will find Tom Cruise serving as a mentor to a new generation of U.S. Navy fighter pilots, while also supposedly tackling issues relating to drone warfare. Cruise has teased that like the first film, the sequel will be a competition film, but with a progression for the character of Maverick. Val Kilmer will be returning to reprise his role of Iceman and Jennifer Connelly (ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL) is also in early negotiations to play TOP GUN: MAVERICK's female lead, a single mother who runs a local bar near the Navy base.

TOP GUN: MAVERICK is set for a July 12, 2019 release.
