Powell and Linklater Reunion
Before he was stealing scenes in Top Gun: Maverick, which sent him into leading man status, Glen Powell worked with Richard Linklater on Everybody Wants Some, which was seen as the spiritual follow-up to Dazed and Confused. Powell worked with Linklater again on Netflix’s Hit Man, which put a twist on the contract killer tropes. Linklater and Powell were recently reported to be returning to that property for a series adaptation for the streamer. In addition to this, they have added a new collaboration to their schedule.
A New Lou Gehrig Film
Recently, Deadline has reported that Powell has been tapped to play legendary baseball player Lou Gehrig in an upcoming film with Linklater at the helm for Universal Pictures. Simon Rich will be writing the script and Saturday Night Live‘s Lorne Michaels, who is a lifelong New York Yankees fan, will be producing the project. Michaels will be producing along with Erin David for their Broadway Video company with their first-look deal with Universal. Powell will also be producing with Dan Cohen in their own first-look deal with Barnstorm. Linklater is even in talks to produce the film through Detour Filmproduction.
The famous Yankees player has been the subject of 1942’s Pride of the Yankees, but his famous story has not been depicted in any other films until now. Gary Cooper would portray Gehrig in that film.
Per Deadline, “Gehrig, considered one of the greatest baseball players of all time, is one of the 20th century’s most revered sport figures thanks in great part to his durability that earned him the nickname ‘The Iron Horse.’ The seven-time All-Star played in a record 2,130 consecutive games, a mark that was thought to be unreachable until Baltimore’s Cal Ripken topped it in 1998.”
What do we know about the Hit Man series?
Meanwhile, in addition to reprising his starring role as Gary Johnson, a professor moonlighting as a hit man of sorts for his city police department, Powell will executive produce the potential Hit Man show, which is written by You’re the Worst creator Stephen Falk and produced by AGC Television and Powell’s Barnstorm Productions banner. Netflix has yet to confirm the series adaptation of Hit Man, though Deadline is confident in its reporting and sources.
Details about the series remain a mystery, though sources suspect it will follow a similar plot to the film, with Powell’s professor, who poses as a hit man using elaborate disguises, finding himself attracted to a woman who requests his services.
