A couple years ago, a trilogy of animated Godzilla films (GODZILLA: PLANET OF THE MONSTERS, GODZILLA: CITY ON THE EDGE OF BATTLE, and GODZILLA: THE PLANET EATER) were released through Netflix. Now Netflix has announced that their association with the iconic kaiju will continue. The streaming service has ordered an anime series called Godzilla: Singular Point, which they expect to premiere sometime in 2021.
Even though Singular Point is another animated Godzilla project, Netflix made it clear that this show will have "a new cast and an original story" that is not related to the trilogy of animated movies. They didn't go so far as to reveal any plot details, though.
Atsushi Takahashi will be directing the series, "which will combine hand-drawn and CG animation styles." Animator Eiji Yamamori is handling the kaiju designs, while the creative team also includes sci-fi novelist Toh Enjoe, Blue Exorcist comic creator Kazue Kato, and composer Kan Sawada. Godzilla: Singular Point is a collaboration between Studio bones and Orange.
I'm always interested in seeing more Godzilla, so I look forward to seeing what Singular Point is going to be like. While Netflix is working on that series, we're still waiting for the day when director Adam Wingard's GODZILLA VS. KONG (which isn't connected to the animated trilogy or Singular Point) will be able to reach theatres. The film's current release date is May 21, 2021.
