The human cast of Gareth Edwards‘ GODZILLA is shaping up rather nicely. While no one has been confirmed yet, names like Aaron Johnson, Bryan Cranston and Elizabeth Olsen have popped up in relation to the epic; a very respectable bundle of thespians. And while it’s obvious that Edwards and production company Legendary Pictures are aiming to make this a “serious” take on the big guy and his catastrophic adventures, the latest name being thrown into the ring comes as a bit of a surprise.

As per Variety, Juliette Binoche is in negotiations to join GODZILLA. As with the other actors mentioned, there are no details regarding her character, although we can take it on faith that she won’t be jumping into a motion-capture suit and portraying Godzilla’s nemesis Mothra. (Although that would be inspired casting.) Binoche, best known for her Oscar-winning turn in THE ENGLISH PATIENT, recently appeared in David Cronenberg‘s COSMOPOLIS and will soon be seen in CAMILLE CLAUDEL, 1915, a biopic about the renowned artist.

It’s not easy picturing the opulent French actress existing in the same universe as Godzilla, and until Warner Bros. issues a press release or set photos pop up, take Binoche and the others’ involvement with a grain of salt. But the randomness of this particular rumor would seem to indicate that Ms. Binoche will be faced with Godzilla’s wanton destruction come May 2014.
