Gremlins animated series announced!

Like most of the rest of you guys out there, one of my favorite Christmas movie (or just, you know, movies in general) is director Joe Dante's horror-comedy GREMLINS. And that is why I'm more than a little excited to pass along the killer news today that WarnerMedia’s upcoming streaming service has put an animated series based on GREMLINS into development. Tze Chun (COLD COMES THE NIGHT) will write and executive produce.

The potential series is said to be:

a period piece that follows Mr. Wing, the Chinese grandfather played in the films by Keye Luke, as a young man as he goes on adventures with the friendly Mogwai Gizmo.

Warner Bros. Television and Amblin Television are producing the series – and that makes sense considering Warner Bros. and Amblin produced the films. WarnerMedia is preparing to launch its very own yet-to-be-named streaming platform and this series is said to be a part of that launch which is expected to begin in 2020. We'll let you know when we hear more! Meanwhile, here's the original movie's synopsis:

A gadget salesman is looking for a special gift for his son and finds one at a store in Chinatown. The shopkeeper is reluctant to sell him the `mogwai' but sells it to him with the warning to never expose him to bright light, water, or to feed him after midnight. All of this happens and the result is a gang of gremlins that decide to tear up the town on Christmas Eve.

There has been talk of a third film for as long as I can remember. The last thing I remember hearing about GREMLINS 3 was back when the original film's screenwriter and reboot producer Chris Columbus said that the film will "almost definitely be a reboot." Hope we hear more about THAT soon!
