Guillermo del Toro hopes to start At the Mountains of Madness in June

We all know Guillermo del Toro has approximately 8,000 projects lined up and that most of them will either have to wait years before seeing the light of day, or not see the light of day at all.. We also know that AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS is his true passion project, and the one that he’s hellbent on making next. And considering it’s being produced by James Cameron and is based on a novel by the twisted genius H.P. Lovecraft, we should all hope he gets it done.

So, the question is, when is this sucker going to happen? In an interview with the folks at Empire (via The Playlist), del Toro says we could see the film as early as 2012. “If everything goes according to plan, we’ll be shooting by June next year for a 2012 release.”

Del Toro goes on to reveal his connection to James Cameron; maybe this has been widely known, but it comes as a revelation to me: “I first talked about it with Jim Cameron 20 years ago when we first met and began our friendship, with ‘Cronos,’ when it was still in the editing room. He came in and he knew the project but his fresh perspective and the right questions from him has made the project take a huge leap. He always advises and consults, and the most important thing is that he loves what I do and he respects what I do. There is no ambiguity about where the final decision rests when it comes to making this movie.”

So in other words, Cameron’s not going to stick his nose where it isn’t wanted. That should be a concern for an alpha dog such as him, but if del Toro is confidant that it won’t be an issue, then I’ll take his word for it.

Hopefully some real updates on MOUNTAINS will be coming in the next couple months as del Toro and Co. dive into pre-production. Stay tuned!
