Back in March, we heard that Guillermo del Toro was focusing on making an otherworldy Cold War romance his next film, since he has passed the PACIFIC RIM 2 directorial reins over to Steven S. DeKnight. All we knew at that time was that Sally Hawkins (pictured below) and Octavia Spencer were going to be starring in what was being described as a "mysterious, magical" story set in 1963.
Now Tracking-Board.com may have revealed what exactly this film is. According to the site, the title is THE SHAPE OF WATER, and the story is RUMORED to center on
Elisa, a mute janitor working at a lab where an amphibious man is being held captive. When Elisa falls in love with the creature, she devises a plan to help him escape with the assistance of her neighbor. The world outside of the lab, however, may prove to be more dangerous for the amphibious man than Elisa could have anticipated.
Hawkins will star as Elisa, while Richard Jenkins is in talks to play Elisa's helpful neighbor. Michael Stuhlbarg is also in talks to join them in the cast.
If Tracking-Board's description is correct, this sounds like an interesting project, and very del Toro. The official description goes like this:
An other-worldly story, set against the backdrop of Cold War era America circa 1963. A mysterious and magical journey from master storyteller Guillermo del Toro.
That still sounds pretty great.
