As you’re probably well aware by now, the original “Leatherface” himself, Gunnar Hansen, is set to make an appearance in next year’s TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE 3D. The details on his character are still under lock and key (although we know for certain that he won’t be wielding the chainsaw again), but now the man has revealed his thoughts on this particular reboot of the franchise… and what we can expect from the new movie’s opening moments.
“It’s a true sequel to the original Chainsaw,” Hansen said at the “Summer Fears” event in Nova Scotia. “The opening of the movie is the last scene of the original movie. In fact they’ll be using some of the footage of Leatherface – of me dancing – at the beginning. they’re using that footage as the opening shot, I think.”
Hansen went on to say: “I’ve read the script, it looked pretty good, and I can say that because I’ve been extremely critical of the sequels and the remakes. This one, you know, it’s not what I would have written, but I didn’t write it. It’s got some neat stuff in it, I think it has some real promise to be a decent movie. And at least they won’t make the mistake when they did the remake in 2003 of saying to me, “Now this time it’s a dark psychological horror movie, not a blood bath like the original.’ So of course my first words were, ‘Have you ever seen the original?'”
Give Hansen props for being honest, about the misbegotten sequels and this new one. Let’s just hope that his “it’s not what I would have written” statement isn’t something we’ll all be saying come next fall.
