This weekend we finally saw the much-anticipated release of Blumhouse and director David Gordon Green's direct sequel to John Carpenter's HALLOWEEN. It had been forecasted that the film was going to snag a massive opening weekend, and it looks like all those box-office gurus out there were correct as the newest entry earned a whopping $77.5 million.
This killer opening weekend makes the movie the second largest October opening weekend of all-time, coming in less than $3 million behind Tom Hardy's VENOM. On top of that, the film's opening is the second largest ever for an R-rated horror, behind STEPHEN KING'S IT, which snagged $123.4 million last September. Internationally, HALLOWEEN brought in an estimated $14.3 million for a World Wide opening weekend of $91.8 million.
The $10 million sequel played to a crowd that was 53% male and 59% were age 25 or older, and earned a "B+" CinemaScore. Considering that, you know, Halloween the holiday is coming up soon, I'm pretty sure we can expect the movie to hold up well over the next two weeks. Not only all of that good stuff, but HALLOWEEN's $77.5 million opening weekend already makes it the highest grossing entry in the entire franchise. Although to be fair, John Carpenter's original film would have snagged $180 million if it opened today. But anyhow…
