With the NBC television series Hannibal, executive producer/showrunner Bryan Fuller spent three seasons delving into the characters and worlds created by author Thomas Harris in the pages of his novels Red Dragon, Hannibal, and Hannibal Rising – all of which were previously turned into feature films, Red Dragon twice. Unfortunately, the series was cancelled (on a cliffhanger, no less) before it could reach the events of the most popular Hannibal story and film, The Silence of the Lambs.
It's been over a year since the Hannibal series reached its end, but while Fuller and stars Hugh Dancy and Mads Mikkelsen have moved on to other projects, everyone is still holding on to some hope that the story will continue somehow, some way.
During a recent appearance on the Blumhouse podcast Shock Wave, Fuller revealed that he would like to return to the world of Hannibal from time to time with multiple mini-series, including one based on The Silence of the Lambs.
We still hope that something can be worked out where we continue telling Hannibal Lecter stories and see The Silence of the Lambs in a way that the book hasn't been represented. I think the film adaptation is a perfect film, but there are a lot of interesting nooks and crannies to explore in a television series. I hope we get to tell the story.
… Ideally for the cast, it would be as a mini-series, here and there. Let's do 6 to 8 episodes of that, and 6 to 8 episodes over here. And do it as an irregular thing.
No networks or streaming services are currently involved with a Hannibal revival of any sorts, so Fuller will have to pull a lot of strings before these hoped-for mini-series could happen, if they'll ever happen, but it's nice to know that no one has given up on the idea.
