Happy Death Day 2U end credits tease Happy Death Day 3

Blumhouse's PG-13 slasher sequel HAPPY DEATH DAY 2U hits this Valentine's Day and already we have word that there are plans for a third (and final?) entry in the series behind the scenes. And those plans look to have filtered into the new movie. Writer-director Christopher Landon says he would love to make a third one and he always imagined the movies as a trilogy. He goes on to say that HAPPY DEATH DAY 3 will happen if this new film does well and that he has "a really bonkers, fun idea" for it. Evidently, there’s a big clue in HAPPY DEATH DAY 2U via an end credit sequence.

Writer-director Christopher Landon on HAPPY DEATH DAY 3:

Oh, I have more than an idea. I always imagined this as a trilogy, so I have the third movie, but it’s just a question of whether this one does well. I would love to make the third one. I think it’s a really bonkers, fun idea… There’s a big clue already in [Happy Death Day 2U]. There’s an end credit sequence, so people who stick around, they’ll see that. But, beyond that, mum’s the word right now.

Star Jessica Rothe adds:

Chris has mentioned it very briefly, but I truly know nothing about it. The only thing I do know is, like with the sequel, Chris will surprise, and amaze, and shock us with whatever turn this franchise takes if there is a third film. I don’t think anyone could have expected the sequel could have been what it is, just in terms of how zany, and crazy, and wonderful, yet emotionally grounded the story is. So, I can only imagine what must be going on in his brain right now.

Here's the rundown on the two tales of time-warping terror:

In Happy Death Day, Teresa "Tree" Gelbman's birthday is the worst day of her life, starting when she wakes up in a stranger's bed. It's also the last day of her life, ending when she's killed by a psychotic killer with a knife. She's dead. And then she wakes up in a stranger's bed, it's September 18, and she has to live it all over again . . . until she's hunted down and wakes up, again, and again. It's a Groundhog Day situation, only with murder, guns, and mean girls, and Tree's only shot at living to see the next day is to relive the day of her murder, over and over, until she discovers her killer's identity.

Happy Death Day 2U picks up the story without missing a beat. Tree Gelbman thought she'd finally lived to see a brand-new day. But when she wakes up on her same birthday and an all-new psychopath in a mask is out to kill her and her friends, she's going to find out that all the rules have changed. Death makes a killer comeback.

Jason Blum once again produces and Christopher Landon returns to write and direct this next chapter, while executive producers Angela Mancuso and John Baldecchi are newly joined by EP Samson Mucke. HAPPY DEATH DAY 2U hits one day before this Valentine’s Day, on February 13, 2019.
