It must be Bring Your Child to Work Day over at AMC, because cinema’s most famous father-and-son dynamic duo is getting back in front of the multi-cam setup. Charlie Sheen and Martin Sheen are officially locking arms once more to play a dysfunctional father and son in AMC’s newly greenlit comedy series, Happy Jack.
According to Variety, the multi-cam comedy will begin production on a six-episode first season in Los Angeles early next year, eyeing a late 2027 premiere on AMC and AMC+. Adding a bit of old-school studio magic to the mix, the project plans to shoot in front of a live studio audience at Warner Bros. Studios, occupying Stage 24, the exact legendary soundstage where Friends taped its iconic run. For Charlie, the series marks a full-fledged return to series television following his scene-stealing, uncredited three-episode stint on Max’s Bookie, where he reunited with Chuck Lorre alongside Sebastian Maniscalco and Omar J. Dorsey.
The official logline for Happy Jack sets up a classic recipe for generational clash:
“Charlie Sheen plays Jack, a bit of a lifelong ne’er-do-well. He’s got two great daughters (though his Dad, played by Martin Sheen, deserves more credit for how they turned out). Kate runs Jack’s company and keeps him on the rails while Sam is a wild child who is more like her Dad. When Sam comes home to introduce everyone to her new boyfriend, Jack’s shocked to learn Paul, a former investment banker turned van life guru, is the same age as he is. Shocked at first (hypocrisy be damned), Jack soon realizes he’s got a choice to make. Will he keep looking out for number one, or embrace this last chance to be a real part of his daughters’ lives?”
Jim Patterson and Matt Ross are attached as writers, executive producers, and co-showrunners, bringing serious sitcom pedigree to the table. Charlie will also serve as an executive producer alongside his starring duties.
Of course, long-time fans know Happy Jack is hardly the first time the Sheen dynasty has shared the frame. Martin earned an Emmy nomination for playing Charlie’s father on Two and a Half Men, and later played his dad again in FX’s Anger Management. Big-screen aficionados will recall their iconic pairing in Oliver Stone’s 1987 classic Wall Street, as well as 1998’s action-thriller No Code of Conduct. The pair also shared screen time in Cadence, Free Money, and the comedy classic Hot Shots! Part Deux.
“I’ve always heard the moments that truly matter happen when they’re supposed to,” Charie said. “The good folks at AMC have played a huge hand in deciding that moment is now. It’s no secret that it’s been a minute, and I’m thrilled to be going back on television in such a meaningful way in an equally wonderful show.
