Has David Cronenberg really written a sequel to The Fly? Will Fox make it?

I guess David doesn’t think too kindly of what Eric Stoltz was laying down in the 1989 sequel…

Anyway, while out promoting his new film A DANGEROUS METHOD, the great David Cronenberg got a chance to sit down with our putrid-pals over at STYD. While a number of topics were broached, none was more compelling than the news that Cronenberg has already written a sequel to his 1986 horror masterwork THE FLY, which currently rests on the shelves at Fox.

Here’s what Cronenberg told STYD:

“‘The Fly’ is not exactly a remake, it’s sort of a sequel, kinda. Yeah, that was a thing. I’ve written a script of that, and I don’t know if that’s going to really happen, but that has to do with Fox.”

Hmm, studios shelving a potentially awesome project? Never.

All sarcasm aside, do you really think Cronenberg would even want to direct his own FLY sequel? Hasn’t the dude moved on to sweeping prestige pictures with Viggo Mortensen…out of genre? One thing’s for sure, Cronenberg’s never been a filmmaker motivated by dollar signs, so unless he’s absolutely heartfelt about reliving the world of THE FLY, I doubt he directs himself. That said, what is up with Fox keeping that script on the shelf? It’s always the best scripts in town that don’t get made…somehow I’m willing to bet this is no exception.

Thoughts on all this? Where do you stand on THE FLY sequel Cronenberg speaks of?
