Anybody else have the misfortune of seeing DUNGEONS & DRAGONS in the theater? Or at all? It was a miscalculated mess from start to finish that also managed to make Thora Birch about as interesting as a piece of wood and had Jeremy Irons in fits of hystrionics that would embarass Liza Minelli.
The culprit behind it was director Courtney Soloman, and he’s been off the radar for close to six years now. However, he’s back now with AN AMERICAN HAUNTING. The flick is based on The Bell Witch legend. It’s a long and involved tale of a haunting that is purported to have resulted in the only documented tale of a spirit killing a man. You can read all about it here. Let me just say that if half of it is true, Emily Rose was a wuss in comparison.
Not only is it a creepy tale that clearly inspired THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT, but it turns out that US President Andrew Jackson was one of the witnesses to some of these events. Pretty damn cool, eh? And I’m not one to hold past history against someone, so I was definitely holding out hope for Soloman to knock this one out of the park.
Until I saw the ridiculous trailer that is. I mean once again the man has landed a stellar cast including Sissy Specek and Donald Sutherland, and apparently sucked the talent right out of them. Plus the effects look overdone and fake. Very disappointing.
Do yourself a favor and just Google Bell Witch to find a lot of stuff creepier than this movie looks like it has any chance to achieve.
