Back in the summer of last year, there was talk of a new HBO series in the works from filmmaker Spike Lee (OLDBOY) called “Da Brick”, inspired in part by the early life of Mike Tyson. A young Mike surrogate was even found: ATTACK THE BLOCK’s John Boyega, which honestly was a stroke of casting genius.
But alas, it’s not meant to be. Deadline reports that HBO has passed on the series from producers Lee, Tyson, writer John Ridley, and Doug Ellin (“Entourage”). The news comes on the heels of HBO’s rejection of an Ellin comedy project called “40”. No Ellin love, HBO? I guess they realized that the last I don’t know how many seasons of “Entourage” f*cking sucked.
“Da Brick” would’ve been a modern exploration of black youth culture in our now so-called “post-racial” America. No word on whether or not there’s any interest from any of the other premium cable providers.
