HBO pulls the trigger, renews Barry for season three

Bill Hader and Alec Berg debuted one of the best new shows on television last year with the hilarious, dark and always rewarding BARRY. Though HBO waited for that first season to end before renewing for season two they’re wasting no time announcing they’re staying in the BARRY business and renewing it for a third season. The announcement comes after only two episodes into the second season, which arrived on March 31, and has since achieved the same critical acclaim as the first season and proves to be yet another hit for the network.

Nothing else was announced in the way of a premiere date, episode count, or plans for a fourth season (although expecting that so soon is just wishful thinking) but given the spring debuts of the first two seasons and the eight-episode count, we should expect something similar for season three. While we have no idea how this second season ends, we can also expect series stars, Hader and Henry Winkler, to return for more.

Debuting in 2018, BARRY was an instant critical smash that went on to win several Emmy awards, including for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for Hader and Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for Winkler. Centering on the story of a hitman who stumbles upon an acting class while tracking down a target, Barry (Hader) discovers his passion for performance, and as he seeks to move on from his old life into the world of acting he learns he can’t shake his past so easily.

This is exciting news for sure, and anyone who has yet to check out BARRY needs to do so whenever they can because it’s truly one of the best shows on TV right now. Equal parts hilarious, silly, dark and emotionally engaging, Hader, Berg, and their team are doing an excellent job exploring this deeply troubled character in a somewhat ridiculous setting, surrounded by equally ridiculous characters. Hader is doing the best work of his career (and proving a deft hand behind the camera) and Winkler and the supporting cast including Stephen Root as Monroe Fuches, Sarah Goldberg as Sally Reed and Anthony Carrigan as NoHo Hank are sensational and together they flesh out this world with oddness and heart.

We're only just getting started on the second season, and already this is proving to be a show that can really last, and it's no wonder HBO is pulling the trigger already on season three. Though I don't know if this is the kind of show that will go close to ten seasons, but four or five is certainly within the realm of possibility.
