Over in Fango land, the crew got ahold of the plot/broadcast details for the upcoming animated version of HELLBOY entitled HELLBOY: Sword of Storms. For those who don’t know, director Guillermo del Toro and comic creator Mike Mignola served as executive producers on the project, and were heavily involved in the development of the visual style and story development. Stars Ron Perlman and Selma Blair reprised their roles (vocally) of Hellboy and Liz Sherman respectively for the film, which hits the Cartoon Network this October.
The synopsis for the film is as follows: When a university professor opens a forbidden scroll, he becomes possessed by the twin demons of Thunder and Lightning, who seek to return to our world to wake their brothers, the dragons. Hellboy, researcher Kate Corrigan and Russell Thorne, an albino psychic, travel to Japan to investigate. Hellboy finds the Sword of Storms, which transports him to a world of Japanese folklore. He learns that the sword not only defeated the demons but is also the key to returning them to Earth. The possessed professor sends several creatures of Japanese myth to retrieve or destroy the sword.
Meanwhile, intense thunderstorms are spreading over the planet and huge monsters are waking all over the world. Suspecting that it’s all connected to the events in Japan, Liz Sherman and Abe Sapien rush to join Kate and Russell. Their plane is hit by lightning and crashes into the sea, and they have to face a giant creature of their own. They learn that if the dragons completely awake, it will be an end to Man’s dominion of the Earth. In the world of folklore, Hellboy is tricked into breaking the sword, which brings him and the two demons back into our world.
All I can say is that this will probably rival Batman: The Animated Series as one of the coolest cartoons based on a comic in recent memory. Sweet-ass art style, sweet-ass del Toro and Mignola involvement, sweet-ass Ron Perlman, fer cryin’ out loud! Look for more info on the premiere in the near future.
