Henry Cavill reveals it came down to him and Daniel Craig for James Bond in Casino Royale

Henry Cavill has been lighting up headlines lately. In addition to reprising his role as Sherlock Holmes in Netflix’s Enola Holmes 2, Cavill had recently announced that he will be returning to his breakout role as Superman in follow-ups to his 2013 film, Man of Steel, especially since Dwayne Johnson was adamant about his Black Adam character eventually squaring off against Supes. Cavill also recently announced that he will be stepping down from The Witcher series and Liam Hemsworth will be taking over the role.

NME reports that Cavill was recently on the Happy Sad Confused podcast and dropped the nugget of trivia that it originally came down to him and Daniel Craig for the role of James Bond in the 2006 reboot Casino Royale. As Cavill puts it,

They told me I was close. They told me it was ultimately down to, and this is what I’ve been told, it was just down to me and Daniel, and I was the younger option. They obviously went with Daniel, and I think it was an amazing choice to go with Daniel. I probably wasn’t ready at the time, and I think Daniel did an incredible job over the past movies, so I’m happy they made that choice. It was a fun adventure at the time and definitely gave me a boost to my career. That was the key element of it.”

Cavill would eventually play a suave secret agent in the movie adaptation of the TV series, The Man from U.N.C.L.E. from Guy Ritchie. When Daniel Craig announced his retirement from James Bond, he put an emphatic nail in that coffin with the finale, No Time to Die, and since his departure, Cavill has been a fan favorite for taking over the role. Recently, the Bond producers outlined that they are looking for someone who would be ready to make a 10-year or more commitment since every Bond actor would appear in multiple adventures. For someone like Cavill, it’s the one that got away. However, the actor has shown his enthusiasm and gratefulness to the fans and Dwayne Johnson for building support for his return as the last son of Krypton.

You can catch Henry Cavill as Sherlock Holmes in Enola Holmes 2 on Netflix starting on November 4.
