It’s also not surprising as the film left a lot open at the end, and almost screamed sequel as soon as the credits rolled- so what’s the plan for PART 2? Craven had this to say: “We want to continue the story of the miners. This time, a group of National Guard screw-ups come face to face with the mutants on their last day of training in the desert. We will take the audience underground [into the mines] as well.”
Um… Well, it’s still early in the writing process, right? It might turn into something else, right? Right? I sure hope so. Not that the concept sounds all that bad, but if I saw a bunch of meat head rejects in danger, I don’t think I’d give a flying f*ck if they got out alive or not… to tell you the truth, I think I’d be voting for the miners to win! I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
But the big question is, will Alexandre Aja be returning to direct the sequel? Sadly, the question is no- due to scheduling conflicts and the sequel being fast tracked for the big screen, Aja will not be returning for the next go-round. But they are in talks with Michael J. Bassett (DEATHWATCH) to direct, though nothing is final as of yet. Maybe they’ll rock it like the SAW series, and find a director that will do a frickin’ bang up job and do the original some justice. Or maybe not. But we can hope!
