Tim Allen on possible Home Improvement spinoff

Is the world ready for the return of Tim ‘The Tool Man’ Taylor? Home Improvement was one of the biggest sitcoms of the ’90s and helped launch Tim Allen to stardom, and like many classic sitcoms these days, it could be due for a spinoff or revival.

While speaking with The Messenger, Tim Allen said that the Home Improvement cast has been discussing a potential spinoff, but that nothing is official. “I see Richard Karn (Al Borland) a lot,” Allen said. “And I talk to the boys [Zachery Ty Bryan, who played Brad; Jonathan Taylor Thomas, who played Randy; and Taran Noah Smith, who played Mark]…and I’m there as one of their friends. We keep talking about [a spinoff].

Allen continued, “It’s funny, one of the conversations we’ve had recently is how weird it would be if Home Improvement would be about the kids’ kids. Like if all of them had children, and I’m a grandparent. Home Re-Improvement or something like that. It’s come up.” The original Home Improvement series ran for eight seasons on ABC, from 1991 to 1999, for a total of 204 episodes.

This isn’t the first time that Tim Allen has spoken of bringing back Home Improvement. He told Entertainment Tonight in 2018 that he was “very interested” in a revival. “I can’t say everybody, but it has been floated,” Allen said. “And more than I would have expected said, ‘Yeah, that would be cool to do it years later,’ like Roseanne.” However, any potential spinoff would have to deal with Zachery Ty Bryan, who has been subject to allegations of domestic abuse and fraud. Allen has commented on the actions of his former TV son. “Zach is a great kid who has grown into a complex man. All you can do is step aside and let somebody go through their process,” Allen said. “At a certain point, he deviated from the guy I know to somebody who is reacting to situations that I had nothing to do with and can’t control…I don’t know what happens when people get corrupted. You just don’t know…I know Zach’s heart. He’s got to figure out his own way.
