Ghostbusters: Afterlife allows Carrie Coon to get in on the ghost action

If 2020 had played out like a normal year, we would have already seen GHOSTBUSTERS: AFTERLIFE, director Jason Reitman's sequel to his father Ivan's films GHOSTBUSTERS (watch it HERE) and GHOSTBUSTERS II (watch that one HERE). But this year being what it is, the film's release was pushed back from July 10, 2020 to March 5, 2021.

Scripted by Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan, GHOSTBUSTERS: AFTERLIFE stars Mckenna Grace, Finn Wolfhard, and Carrie Coon as a family that 

moves back home to a small town. While there, they begin to learn more about who they are and the secrets of the town itself.

Speaking with Collider, Coon revealed that she was initially concerned that the role she was being offered was just "the mom"… but the job got more appealing when she found out she'd be able to face off with some ghosts.

I think of Dee Wallace in ET who is a wonderful actress who then sort of became – well, she actually went on, had a really interesting life, but, you know, she became sort of the franchise mom. And I thought about that, but Jason is smarter than that. Jason is the next generation, and he wrote a lot of fun for all of us, and it was one of the reasons I said yes to it. You know, she actually has a personality, a sense of humor and she does get in on the action, and that was really fun for me! I mean, I’m a Ghostbuster basically, which is insane! I grew up with that movie!"

During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Coon also confirmed that her husband Tracy Letts is in the cast.

The reason he’s in Ghostbusters is because he happened to be in Canada with me and (their child) Haskell when they lost an actor due to a conflict, and so they just asked if he was around. (Laughs.) So it worked out really well. … And not to diminish my husband’s talent; he’s very talented, obviously. But it was convenient for them to have him in that city."

Coon has previously told Indiewire that AFTERLIFE is a "love letter to the franchise" that is "very funny" and 

very warm in a way that we, perhaps, need right now. It’s a real balm for the soul. I think that will actually surprise people. I think it’s for everyone. People will be grateful for the escape that it’s going to offer from the world."

The aforementioned actors are joined in the cast by Paul Rudd, Bokeem Woodbine, Celeste O'Connor, Logan Kim, and Oliver Cooper, with Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver, and Annie Potts reprising their roles from the original films.
