Gigi Saul Guerrero to direct 10-31 for Orion and Eli Roth

Gigi Saul Guerrero

Gigi Saul Guerrero is on a roll. Six months ago, her feature directorial debut CULTURE SHOCK was released as part of the Hulu / Blumhouse anthology series Into the Dark. Blumhouse was so impressed with her work on that film that they had her direct an episode of The Purge and made a first-look film and TV deal with her, under which she'll write and direct more feature films and television programming for them. Three months ago, we learned that Guerrero had set up a genre project based on the legend of Santa Muerte at Screen Gems. Now it has been announced that Orion Pictures and producer Eli Roth have hired her to direct a horror thriller titled 10-31.

Written by Ian Shorr and Peter Gamble from a story by Laurie Ashbourne and a screen story by Kathy Charles, 10-31 is, as you probably assumed, set on Halloween. The story follows

a young woman who takes her niece and nephew trick-or-treating and discovers a note inside a candy wrapper informing her there’s a killer loose on her block.

Guerrero had this to say about the project:

To be working with such a prestigious studio label like Orion, and alongside my friend, Eli, is next level incredible. This was a real page-turner of a script. I instantly felt passionate about taking on this story and making it a thrilling and visceral ride for audiences on the big screen."

Roth added that he has been a fan of

Gigi’s for many years, from her very first shorts, to her critically acclaimed television features. Gigi’s a powerful new voice in genre cinema, and I know she will deliver the goods that horror fans want in new and surprising ways."

Roth is producing 10-31 with Roger Birnbaum through their company Arts District Entertainment. Bellevue Productions' John Zaozirny is also producing.

Guerrero's pre-CULTURE SHOCK work included the short film EL GIGANTE, which was picked up by Shudder, and segments of the anthology films MÉXICO BÁRBARO and ABCs OF DEATH 2.5.

The synopsis for 10-31 sounds like the set-up for a fun Halloween horror tale to me, so I look forward to seeing how it will turn out.
