Horror @ the Box Office – February 11-13: Sandler and Bieber are truly horrifying

I wish I had some happy news to report to you on Valentine’s Day, since I love you all so dearly, but the weekend box office numbers are pretty grim. The Adam Sandler vehicle JUST GO WITH IT landed the #1 spot with $31 million, and the 3D documentary JUSTIN BIEBER: NEVER SAY NEVER came in a close second at a little over $30 million. Rounding out the new releases were the animated feature GNOMEO AND JULIET at #3 and Kevin Macdonald’s THE EAGLE at a distant #4.

Christian E. Christiansen’s THE ROOMMATE, which came out on top last week, dropped to the #5 spot below all of the new releases, while last week’s second place, Alister Grierson’s SANCTUM, fell to #8. Each suffered a loss of about 45%. Mikael Håfström’s THE RITE was kicked out of the Top 10 and now sits at #11. Darren Aronofsky’s BLACK SWAN is still hanging in there at #14.

Not much to report on otherwise, since there were no new genre releases. At least last Valentine’s Day weekend we got THE WOLFMAN. Sure, it was a disappointment, but at least the option was there. Next week we’ll see how I AM NUMBER FOR and UNKNOWN can fare up against the new BIG MOMMAS movie.
