Apparently hot chicks just aren’t the box office draw that they used to be, as Zach Snyder’s SUCKER PUNCH opened at #2 this weekend with $19 million, unable to beat the DIARY OF A WIMPY KID sequel for the top spot. This marks the second lowest opening for a Snyder-directed movie, beating out LEGEND OF THE GUARDIANS but falling far behind 300, WATCHMEN and DAWN OF THE DEAD.
Neil Burger’s LIMITLESS did fairly well #3 with $15.2 million, a mere 20% drop from its #1 opening last weekend. Jonathan Liebesman’s BATTLE: LOS ANGELES is hanging in there at #6 with $7.6 million in its third week.
Greg Mottola’s PAUL unfortunately failed to pick up the pace, coming in at #7 with $7.5 million after opening at #5 last week. Catherine Hardwicke’s RED RIDING HOOD and George Nolfi’s THE ADJUSTMENT BUREAU each dropped down a couple of spots to #8 and #9, respectively.
Jaume Collet-Serra’s UNKNOWN came in at #17 with $650,000, and DJ Caruso’s I AM NUMBER FOUR once again followed at #18 with $478,000. Darren Aronofsky’s BLACK SWAN, despite its impending DVD and Blu-ray release this week, still played in 203 theaters for $170,000.
Next weekend may be April Fool’s Day, but we have some cool stuff hitting the big screen. James Wan’s horror film INSIDIOUS and Duncan Jones’ action thriller SOURCE CODE will go up against the kids flick HOP. Quentin Dupieux’s killer tire flick RUBBER will hit limited theaters, while James Gunn’s action/comedy SUPER plays New York and Los Angeles.
