That seems to be the main theme retained from the original flick (which I found quite satisfying on a purely visceral level): the underground European business providing random tourists to neophyte torturers and murderers for a certain amount of cash. As the success of the SAW franchise has proven, audiences do love the gruesome dismantling of humans for entertainment value!
