Hugo Weaving says he’ll be playing 6 different characters in Cloud Atlas

Now that casting on CLOUD ATLAS – the epic sci-fi venture from the Wachowski brothers and Tom Tykwer – is starting to take shape, Aussie actor Hugo Weaving has confirmed what we previously understood was the case…each actor in the film will play multiple parts. In the case of Weaving, he’s lined up to play six. Six different characters!

But don’t take it from little old me. Peep what Weaving himself told The Sunday Herald Sun:

“That’s a project that’s really exciting because all the actors will be playing more than one role…I actually have six characters in the same film and they are all different people in six different stories.”

Nice! So it’s not just Weaving that’ll inhabit more than one character, all the actors will. That’s enough for me to get on board. How about you?

Also starring Tom Hanks, Halle Berry (below), Jim Broadbent, Susan Sarandon, Ben Winshaw and possibly Ian McKellan and James McAvoy – CLOUD ATLAS consists of six nested stories that take us from the remote South Pacific in the nineteenth century to a distant, post-apocalyptic future. Each tale is revealed to be a story that is read (or watched) by the main character in the next. All stories but the last one get interrupted at some moment, and after the sixth story concludes at the center of the book, the novel “goes back” in time, “closing” each story as the book progresses in terms of pages but regresses in terms of the historical period in which the action takes place. Eventually, readers end where they started, with Adam Ewing in the Pacific Ocean, circa 1850.

CLOUD ATLAS flutters in May 4th, 2012.
