Do we really need another I AM LEGEND? No, of course not. The first one is a good movie – well, HALF of a good movie, anyway. (Gee, can you guess which half I mean??) Hollywood is not able to leave well enough alone though, so we must somehow shoe-horn Will Smith into another entry. We’ve known that the smart boys at Warner Bros. were prepping another LEGEND movie, but the announcement was that it was going to be a prequel – which makes sense, as its the only logical way you could have Smith involved. (Um… spoiler alert…) But when has logic ever stood in the way of Hollywood? Nevaaahh!
According to an AintItCoolNews source, the plans are now to make a sequel to the blockbuster Francis Lawrence flick. Did I hear you say “Huh?!” Or was that me? Both, then… Here’s what their spy had to say, regarding the initial prequel idea, and where the project now stands:
Smith is actually the one who developed the initial story. It took place several years before the original film and there were still pockets of survivors and the story centered around Smith interacting, bonding, and ultimately failing to save them. For months this was the story. Warner’s didn’t much care for it and Smith and Weiss eventually came on board and all parties agreed to change things up. Well this change is pretty insane, the film is no longer a prequel, it’s a fucking sequel!
I guess you could reason that Smith doesn’t perish during the finale’s massive explosion, but any sequel involving his character screams contrived in the extreme. Good lord, just let him – and this idea – die.
(Dear Warner Bros. If indeed another I AM LEGEND film goes into pre-production, may I please request that you shell out a few bucks to hire ACTORS to play the “vampires” and go easy on the CG? The effects in the first film are HORRIBLE – shockingly so, considering what f*cking century we’re living in – and it would just make sense to hire a couple dozen extras and an expert make-up team. I know, its crazy, you can computer generate anything nowadays, and usually do. I just have a crazy feeling it’ll look better this way. Trust me…. Love, Eric Walkuski.)
