Broadway musicals like CHICAGO and LES MISERABLES have had success being translated for the screen, and now one of the biggest ever is getting its own major movie adaptation – CATS. Working Title and Universal have big plans for the movie and the project has already nabbed some major stars to flesh out the cast including Ian McKellen, Taylor Swift, Jennifer Hudson and James Corden.

The movie is set to be directed by Tom Hooper who delivered a massive hit with his adaptation of LES MIS in 2012, which went on to nab several Oscar nominations and soar past $100 million at the domestic box office. Word is Hooper has been developing the project for two years with Lee Hall (BILLY ELLIOT) adapting the script from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical, with the movie expected to shoot this fall in the U.K.

CATS is one of the most popular shows ever to hit Broadway, standing as the fourth-longest-running show in its history. The story follows around a group of cats known as “the Jellicles,” and centers on one night as they decide which among them will ascend to the Heaviside and come back to a new life.

More casting announcements will come before the movie starts shooting this fall, but already that's a pretty hot ticket of talent. I'll watch McKellen in just about anything, so right there I'm sold. Hudson and Corden are great too, and though I haven't been blown away with Swift's acting quite yet she certainly has the musical chops for the job. I wasn't a big fan of LES MIS, but I like Hooper as a director so I'll keep an open mind with this one. Really, it just sounds super bonkers when you think about it. Can you imagine McKellen in a skin-tight suit prancing around with claws on? Good or bad, this will movie will be a joy to watch.
