Obsession has become a phenomenon beyond what everyone could predict. Focus Features bought the U.S. distribution rights to the Curry Barker film for $15 million and the film itself sported a very indie price tag of $750,000. Obsession has recently crossed the $400 million mark at the box office, which makes it the highest-grossing movie with a budget under a million dollars. This title was recently held by the Bruce Lee classic, Enter the Dragon. The movie is impeccably made, with our own Chris Bumbray giving the film an 8/10 review, calling it “a slam-bang indie horror gem.”
While Barker is now the hot new director, a lot of attention is also rightfully on the film’s breakout star, Inde Navarrette, due to her delightfully unhinged performance. The film world is her oyster as she looks to her future projects. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Navarrette has already taken meetings with Jake Schreier, who last directed Thunderbolts* for Marvel Studios and has been tapped to direct the reboot of the X-Men franchise. When Navarrette was being interviewed by Nylon, she was asked if she would be interested in taking part in a Marvel film and she simply responded, “I would.”
She has also apparently met with Michael Mann for a possible future project. Could she possibly be offered a part in Heat 2? A character named Gabriele from the book seems like a nice fit for her. In the Heat 2 novel, Gabriela is the daughter of Elisa, who is a woman who becomes romantically involved with the professional thief Neil McCauley, originally played by Robert De Niro in the first film.
THR does report that Navarrette has already locked down her next project, titled Invertigo, from director Matthias Hoene. Invertigo is about “a group of reckless teens who convince a young park worker to sneak them onto a rollercoaster before its official opening. However, a system failure traps them hundreds of feet in the air, forcing them to fight for survival as buried traumas and hidden tensions erupt into chaos.”
