Infinity War directors put fan worries to rest with small Hawkeye update

AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR will feature virtually every character from the MCU, including Iron Man, the Guardians of the Galaxy and Black Panther. They’ve all been featured in the promotion, but one character, Hawkeye/Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner), has been noticeably absent from the posters and trailers and said absence has caused much ruckus in the fan community. Nowhere is the bow-wielding Avengers to be seen, and fans are demanding answers. Finally, we have those answers…sort of!

Directors Joe and Anthony Russo have finally given us a small update on the status of the sharp-shooting character (via Joe.ie), but without really giving anything away. In essence, the character is safe and well and is probably on some super-secret mission doing spy stuff.

We keep saying, 'Patience is a virtue.' We did not forget the twice-nominated Jeremy Renner. We cooked up a story for him that is a little bit of a long play. Not a short play.

Okay, that may not exactly quench your thirsts, but given how Hawkeye isn’t anywhere in any piece of footage or promotion, it’s at least a hint as to why. While the Avengers are off fighting Thanos somewhere Hawkeye could be playing out his own arc while on his own little journey. The question this now poses is what could this “long play” be?

Hawkeye hasn’t really gotten the same level of attention as other Avengers in past movies. He had an expanded role in AGE OF ULTRON but didn’t have as big of a part in CIVIL WAR. My guess is the Russos wanted to give him something big to do here that didn’t necessarily involve fighting Thanos. If I were a betting man, I would put my money down on him having something to do with bringing Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and/or Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) into the fold. We know the latter will be in the fourth Avengers movie, and maybe Hawkeye has a hand in bringing her out of the shadows, perhaps along with Fury. Does anyone want to put money down on this?

AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR arrives April 27.
