Weird story here – actually it may be no story at all, since this has been rumored for quite some time now – but I’ll let it loose and see if it flies. Bloody-Disgusting is reporting that JURASSIC PARK 4 has begun casting, and will begin shooting in Hawaii later this year… They don’t name their source or even give a hint as to where they drudged this up, and I’m a bit surprised something like this – which if true really would be big news – was not announced at Comic-Con or through a trade like Variety. (They also go on to say Laura Dern is already attached.) Because of this, and the nature of the film’s plot, take it with a grain of salt.
They claim the story for the flick is close to, if not exactly, the really bizarre one cooked up by William Monahan and John Sayles YEARS ago (‘04 actually). This plot is straight out of the f*ckin’ Twilight Zone: A soldier of fortune finds himself in a Medieval castle where a nefarious corporation has been breeding dinosaurs to be military weapons. They are super-smart, they have dog and human DNA encoded in them (to make them obedient and problem-solving), and they have enhanced legs and forearms. Oh and they’d be wearing body armor, and maybe shooting people too. Serious, serious insanity ensues (it would have to, right?) I remember it took me an hour to retrieve my jaw off the floor when I first read this… (to read the original script review, go over to AICN.)
I must admit that while the series seems exhausted at this point, I REALLY can’t believe Steven Spielberg and co. would go forward with an idea this absolutely batshit crazy. It seems like an entry in the CARNOSAUR franchise more than anything. I guess it would be a ballsy move, to say the least, but the potential for it being a nightmarish laughingstock just seems too great.
Let’s take an informal poll: how many of you would welcome this intense change of pace; how many wouldn’t mind another JP movie, just not one that seems to have been hatched by a roomful of spaced-out potheads; and how many don’t give a rat’s ass one way or the other?
