The sixth entry in the Insidious franchise, Insidious: Out of the Further, is aiming for an August 21, 2026 theatrical release – and franchise star Lin Shaye says this one is going to introduce us to a “truly scary” villain who might bring Dracula to mind.
Jacob Chase, director of the 2020 horror movie Come Play, is at the helm, working from a screenplay he wrote with David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick.
Jason Blum, Oren Peli, James Wan, and Leigh Whannell are producing the sequel, with Johnson-McGoldrick serving as an executive producer alongside Ryan Turek, Steven Schneider, and Brian Kavanaugh-Jones.
The story Chase and Johnson-McGoldrick crafted for this addition to the Insidious franchise has the following synopsis: A trio of stalkers infiltrate a quiet suburb and force a new family into the astral plane, where they uncover a terrifying truth: the Further is bleeding into the real world.
The mention of “a trio of stalkers” brings to mind a casting call we saw several months ago:
LESTER: The character is portrayed as he/him, 60s+, BIPOC. Small and hunched, he is a strange and frightening man who torments his neighbor… SUPPORTING. SEEKING UNIQUE, FRIGHTENING APPEARANCES.
PATSY: The character is portrayed as she/her, 60s+, BIPOC. Short and thin, she is a garish and frightening woman who torments her neighbor… SUPPORTING. SEEKING UNIQUE, FRIGHTENING APPEARANCES.
EDNA: The character is portrayed as she/her, 60s+, BIPOC. Tall and thin, she is an eerie and frightening woman who torments her neighbor…SUPPORTING. SEEKING UNIQUE, FRIGHTENING APPEARANCES.
As mentioned, franchise star Lin Shaye has returned for Insidious: Out of the Further. This time, she shares the screen with Amelia Eve (The Haunting of Bly Manor), Brandon Perea (Nope), Maisie Richardson-Sellers (The Originals), Sam Spruell (Legend), Island Austin (I Can Only Imagine 2), and Laura Gordon (Late Night with the Devil).
Spruell plays the demonic Cyrus, the villain character Shaye hyped up in a recent Entertainment Weekly interview.
Shaye told EW, “[He] was truly scary. When I met him on the street, I had a visceral response, which was crazy. So it’s a whole new catalog of people and even of ideas.“
Shaye added that Cyrus stands out among the Insidious demons because he’s funny and very disarming. “There’s a grandness to him. It’s sort of like Dracula. There’s this enfolding and this bigness. I did say to [Spruell] it feels like Shakespeare. It feels very otherworldly, bigger than life, but very rooted in reality. I think that’s a perfect combination for an antagonist who is gonna be really awful.“
