Insidious producers set to remake Spanish-language horror flick Atrocious?

The next big found footage thing is ATROCIOUS, a Spanish language horror effort from writer-director Fernando Barreda Luna. The film made its world premiere at the Slamdance film festival this year, and a quick glance at its reviews suggest a solid creepfest. (Check out the teaser trailer below.) Now it would appear as though it’s time to roll out the plans to remake it. Naturally!

TwitchFilm is reporting that Brian Kavanaugh-Jones and Jason Blum – producers of James Wan’s INSIDIOUS as well as upcoming horror efforts from Rob Zombie (LORDS OF SALEM) and Barry Levinson (THE BAY) – have picked up the rights to ATROCIOUS and will soon be setting about remaking it. As it’s close in tone to their producing partner Oren Peli’s debut film, PARANORMAL ACTIVITY, it’s possible they see the potential for another breakout success on that level.

But why not release it first? Give the US audience a chance to discover this one with a proper release. I know it’s naive to think in those terms at this point, but I’ll never give up hope that a good movie will always find an audience.

The synopsis: In April of 2010, Spanish police reported the discovery of 37 hours of recorded evidence that shed new light on a gruesome murder investigation. The found footage documents a family of five spending their holidays at their summer house, where brother-and-sister Cristian and July Quintanilla pass the time investigating a terrifying local urban legend. As their investigation intensifies, strange occurrences in and around the house escalate rapidly, before culminating in unspeakable atrocities.

We’ll give you the full story on this once we get confirmation.
